Huawei Helps Carriers Win DCD Awards 2013

Huawei, a leading global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions provider, received two prestigious awards at the Datacenter Dynamics(DCD) Greater China Awards 2013. Huawei-China Unicom Beijing Huangcun IDC Project, as a joint project between Huawei and China Unicom win the Innovation in the Medium Data Center award and the pilot DC project undertaken by Huawei and Heilongjiang Mobile received the "Green" Data Center award.

The Datacenter Dynamics Awards are well known as the "Oscars" of the data center (DC) industry. The awards recognize innovation, leadership, and “out of the box” thinking in the data center industry around the world. DCD invited 17 senior DC experts to form an authoritative jury to ensure the objectiveness of the selection process, including Zhong Jinhua, a DC industry design and standardization expert in China, and Stephen Worn, CTO of Datacenter Dynamics.

Huawei-China Unicom Beijing Huangcun IDC Project won the award for its innovative idea of warehouse-based DCs. A traditional building-based DC occupies a large area, requires a long period of construction, and is expensive. When establishing a DC in Huangcun, Beijing Unicom adopted an innovative warehouse-based DC solution proposed by Huawei in order to avoid these issues. Deploying the DC with unused warehouse, and this solution proved to be flexible , fast delivery and cost effective, and. In just three months, Huawei completed the design, conducted the product sample test and factory acceptance test, and successfully mass produced, delivered, and deployed the DC facilities including dozens of DC modules and over a thousand cabinets.

The pilot DC project by Huawei and Heilongjiang Mobile made innovative use of the extremely low temperature of Heilongjiang, China's northernmost province, to cool the DC naturally. The method greatly reduces power consumption of the cooling system. The highly efficient Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and power distribution system further reduce power loss during power transmission and distribution. The annual power usage effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.22 particularly impressed the Datacenter Dynamics Awards jury, enabling the project to win the "Green" Data Center award.
