A couple of days ago we had the opportunity to talk about the mysterious Meizu smartphone running the Ubuntu OS. At that time, two fresh photos depicting the device had leaked, and all evidence was pointing out that the gadget was indeed part of the Meizu family. In fact, the company’s vice president has recently made an announcement, claiming that an Ubuntu-powered gadget will hit the market sometime in the following months.
Fast forward, and today we have more information regarding the device. Dubbed the “Meizu MX3″, this particular smartphone has now been officially teased by Flyme (one of Meizu’s official accounts on Weibo), in several high quality photos. Yup, it’s pretty much official. The Ubuntu-running Meizu MX3 is a real device, and although we can’t pinpoint its exact launch date or discuss about its hardware specifications at this point (they are probably going to be identical to the Android version of MX3), the gadget seems to be closing in to its release date.
Previous rumors were suggesting that the handset might hit the shelves in May, and hopefully, Meizu will use the MX3 as an opportunity to make an impact on the western markets. Back in December, Canonical’s CEO (Mark Shuttleworth) announced that the company has partnered up with a smartphone maker in order to ship an Ubuntu smartphone, and this might be it.
