Slower-than-expected sales of flagship models launched by a number of smartphone vendors, including LG Electronics, HTC and Huawei, may result in significant changes of market shares in 2014, according to industry observers.
Although HTC's flagship model, the HTC One, gained a number of awards at international events, sales of the model have been flat since its launch in late March 2013, affecting the vendor's overall performance, including heavy losses in the third quarter of 2013.
LG originally projected to sell 10 million units of its Optimus G2 flagship model in 2013, but global sales have so far reached slightly over two million units, the observers noted.
The release of the G2 was too close to the launch of the Nexus 5, which affected sales momentum of LG's own flagship model, added the sources.
Huawei has so far shipped only over three million units of its latest flagship model, the Ascend P6, lagging far behind its shipment target of 10 million units. The company's low global brand image and insufficient marketing efforts are blamed for the poor performance, the observers indicated.
The centralization of smartphone purchases by telecom operators and subscribers on devices coming from more popular brands or carrying significant differentiation will continue to weigh on sales of flagship models launched by vendors in 2014, commented the sources.
