First look: iOS-connected smart watches, health trackers, home automation from Archos

Archos is hitting the wearable devices market hard in 2014, with a new range of products showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show capable of connecting to Apple's iOS mobile platform via Bluetooth Low Energy.
Archos

A total of three new smart watch models from Archos were showcased to AppleInsider on Wednesday in Las Vegas., Nev. All three products are based on the same basic technology, but will offer different capabilities in terms of battery life and screen technology.

The cheapest model will sell for $50 and will feature a black-and-white display much like the Pebble watch. This low-tech display will allow the device to sport a lengthy 1.5-week-long battery life on a single charge, the company claims.

Archos

A second model will be available for $100 featuring a color LCD touchscreen. This more power-intensive display will offer one to two days of battery life on a charge.

Archos

Finally, the high-end Archos smart watch will sell for $129, and will feature an e-ink curved display. This top-of-the-line iOS accessory will also sport an advertised battery life of 1.5 weeks.

Archos representatives said they see the growing smart watch market as a place where users want to extend their smartphone screen. The accessories will display time, customizable iPhone notifications, media control and more.

But Archos isn't stopping at the wrist when it comes to wearable devices. The company also has an iPhone-compatible pedometer, a blood pressure monitor, and a connected scale all coming this year.

Archos

All three accessories will connect to the same application which will be available on the iOS App Store. And the devices will also remember recorded stats until they are synced, so no data is lost if a user's iPhone isn't near by.

Like other, existing pedometers, Archos's product will measure distance walked and calories burned, and it will sell for $50. The scale will determine fat mass in addition to weight, and will be available for $50. The blood pressure monitor is set to have a price of $65.

Finally, Archos is looking to bring the whole package together with system of connected/automated home devices that interface with both iOS and the company's proprietary Android-based Smart Home Tablet.

Archos

The setup is structured around connected sensors, like a motion sensor, indoor/outdoor camera, weather monitor and even a tracking tag that attaches to pets. The motion sensors, for example, can detect when a window or door is opened, or keep tabs on activities within the house.

As for home automation, the French company is planning a variety of plugs to allow users remote control access of lights and other appliances. These sets can be controlled via the iOS app, while more advanced functions require the dedicated Smart Home Tablet.

Evasi0n iOS 7 Jailbreak Not Patched in iOS 7.1 Beta 3

Evasi0n, the jailbreak utility for iOS 7 (including beta 1 and beta 2) is rumored to be patched before the final iOS 7.1 release.

When Apple released iOS 7.1 beta 3 earlier today, many of you were wondering if they had patched evasi0n7. The good news is that Apple has not patched evasion7, according to iH8sn0w -- therefore the jailbreak still works on beta 3. Although evasi0n has not been updated to support beta 3, there are some unofficial builds floating around that do support it.

While Apple has not patched the exploits evasi0n7 uses in 7.1 beta 3, it is likely that by the final release (rumored for March), they will indeed fix the vulnerabilities therefore making evasi0n7 incompatible with iOS 7.1

iOS 7.1 beta 3 brought UI tweaks including an updated keyboard, dialer and call screens.

Yahoo News Digest: Get In The Know In No Time

With the introduction of mobile devices, plenty of things have changed. The way we find, consume and share news has evolved. As things become more complex in nature, news consumption has become overwhelming.  That’s why today, we’re excited to introduce Yahoo News Digest for iPhone and iPod touch.
Yahoo News Digest delivers the most important news twice a day, right to your mobile device. Our Digests provide a definitive summary of all the need-to-know news so you can stay on top of what’s happening.
Remember waking up to the local morning news? Coming home to the evening news? Reading a newspaper from front to back page? These formats have been daily habits since the invention of the television and the printing press. We wanted Yahoo News Digest to revisit a content format that when read, led you to a sense of completion and conclusiveness, much like reading the newspaper did.
With Summly, we learned that people don’t necessarily have the time to read a lengthy article, especially when they have limited screen real-estate while they’re on the go. By giving powerful algorithmic summaries, we found that people were willing to consume more content when it was boiled down to the most important bits.
We’ve taken summarization to the next level with News Digest, by algorithmically and editorially selecting the important articles and using multi-document summarization to identify the key ‘bits and pieces of information’. We’ve named these bits and pieces “Atoms.”  Our Atoms assembled from around the web include articles, maps, infographics, Wikipedia extracts, videos, photos and more. Stories contain different atomic units which convey different dimensions of the story from the who, what, when, how, and why of a topic.
Once you’ve gotten through all the key stories you’ve “completed the digest” and caught up with the most important news of the day.
Our goal with the Yahoo News Digest is to make sure you’re always in the know. We hope you’ll enjoy it.
Yahoo News Digest makes your news reading experience simplified, effortless, comprehensive, and complete.  Download the app today and get in the know in no time.

The Chase - Unity iPad 4 / Nexus 7 high-fidelity mobile graphics demo.

The Chase shows the potential of the Unity game engine for bringing high visual fidelity to mobile devices like the iPad 4 or Nexus 7.

New PowerVR Series6XE GPUs bring OpenGL ES 3.0 graphics to everyone

Have you ever looked at your $100 smartphone or tablet after watching Unity’s ‘The Chase’ demo and said to yourself: “I wish my devices could run cool OpenGL ES 3.0 content like that”? The good news coming out of CES 2014 is that soon they will, thanks to PowerVR Series6XE, a new family of Rogue GPUs we are introducing today.
Smartphone shipments alone will surpass one billion units in 2013, as the demand for low-cost smart computing and entertainment in emerging markets continues to increase and as the prices of devices continues to decrease. To put more perspective behind that number, the smartphone market in Asia is expected to be nearly twice as large as the U.S. market this year – and most of that market is based on entry-level and mid-range devices.
Designed to address this trend and fully support the latest graphics and compute APIs, including OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenCL 1.x, the new Series6XE GPUs will power a new generation of affordable mobile devices, including wearables, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and other consumer electronics.
The Chase from Unity is a high-fidelity OpenGL ES 3.0 mobile graphics demo.
Imagine best-in-class, high-quality graphics and efficient, low-power compute, all packaged into the smallest, fully-featured GPU IP cores designed to date. The result? A new line-up of three PowerVR Rogue graphics cores that deliver the same fillrate performance as equivalent Series5XT multi-processor configurations but offer much more in terms of features and functionality.

Full OpenGL ES 3.0 in a half-cluster PowerVR Series6XE GPU

The PowerVR Series6XE GPU IP family includes the following GPUs launched today at CES:
  • PowerVR G6050: with an innovative half-cluster design, this is the smallest fully-featured GPU core available from Imagination; it supports both OpenGL ES3.0 and OpenCL 1.x and provides a highly-efficient fillrate throughput which makes it ideal for a wide range of entry-level devices.
  • PowerVR G6060: this core augments the half-cluster design of the G6050 with the addition of PVRIC2, Imagination’s second generation lossless PowerVR Image Compression, providing an optimal balance of small size and bandwidth reduction for products such as entry-level tablets or Full HD TV and STBs.

  • PowerVR G6100: this is an updated and further optimized version of the original area-optimized Series6XE Rogue core that features a single Unified Shader Cluster (USC) combined with a high-performance texture mapping unit, enabling it to deliver the same raw fillrates as multi-processor GPUs from the previous generation.
  • PowerVR G6110: this single-cluster core is based on the G6100 design but updates it to our second generation PVRIC2 technology; this creates an important competitive advantage for this GPU in key products such as low-cost 4K Ultra HD TVs where bandwidth is a limited and valuable resource.

What matters most for cost-conscious consumers

When it comes to entry-level and mid-range devices, finding the right balance of performance and features becomes a balancing act that not many can pull off, especially when you take area considerations into account.
Whenever consumers hear about entry-level, they usually think price, not features. While they can accept certain compromises for less expensive devices, consumers’ expectations are always high when it comes to performance. If you are a device manufacturer, you want to offer customers the best possible experience for a certain price point; customers never want a trade-off in features if that severely affects performance. For most people, performance comes first, while the feature set is much lower on the priority list.

Leading technologies for more affordable devices

This is where our PowerVR Series6XE Rogue GPUs step in. By providing optimized solutions for entry-level and mid-range platforms, we are providing an opportunity for silicon vendors to aggressively compete in performance and features while keeping costs down.
There are several examples of how our innovative technologies enable this.
Firstly, our PVR3C lossless and lossy compression technologies significantly lower system-level costs by reducing memory subsystem and RAM modules requirements for SoCs and thus bringing device bill of materials (BOM) costs down.
Since memory traffic is a major source for heat dissipation, PVR3C lowers power consumption at the system level, reducing the requirements for more expensive cooling methods.
PowerVR Series6XE GPU - PVRIC2 for PowerVR G6110 G6060PVRIC2 for PowerVR Series6XE GPUs reduces memory bandwidth requirements
Secondly, Design Optimization Kits (DOKs) for PowerVR Rogue GPUs allow customers to optimize for power, performance and area (PPA) in a much more flexible way compared to competing solutions. Our DOKs have been proven to deliver significantly better results, shorter design cycle times, as well as reduced silicon area and power consumption. For example, silicon vendors that license our DOKs for the PowerVR G6100 core can achieve up to 30% reduction in area.
PowerVR Rogue DOKImagination offers DOKs for PowerVR Rogue GPUs
Finally, one of the most important elements a consumer wants in an entry-level smart device is the knowledge that it will be compatible with mainstream and high-end solutions such as tablets, smartphones and other digital entertainment devices. Most mobile users own several devices including entry-level, mainstream and high-end systems. You want to avoid the negative experience where trying to get the same app to work across all devices becomes a chore; consumers are much more likely to dispose of the cheaper device first.
The new PowerVR Series6XE and Series6XT GPUs change this paradigm. They enable developers to target a scalable line of software compatible devices. The hardware feature set for all Rogue GPUs is transparent to app developers, meaning they do not have to worry about differences in instruction set. Even better, all Rogue GPUs are software compatible with the PowerVR SGX family, which makes porting code a breeze. This compatibility is valuable in helping developers and system integrators meet a wide range of market needs, enabling OEMs to create a complete range of devices that can essentially run the same software, albeit at different performance levels.
PowerVR Series6XT6XE GPU - PowerVR roadmapThe current PowerVR Rogue graphics IP roadmap
Now that we’ve run through all the advantages of our new Series6XE GPUs, you can understand what makes them perfect for entry-level devices. It’s certainly more than their raw performance or feature set; in that space, they already deliver greater performance per core compared to previous generation GPUs, all while supporting the latest graphics and compute API standards. What makes them unique is how they can efficiently enable tomorrow’s low-cost solutions by merely using a single or half-cluster design to provide the same or better performance to a competing dual- or quad-core solution.

Analyst predicts Apple will transform notebook market with 12-inch hybrid 'iPad Pro' this fallap

As part of a series of predictions for 2014, Evercore Partners analyst Patrick Wang believes Apple will show a renewed focus on the enterprise market with a new 12-inch iPad hybrid, which he believes would fundamentally change the notebook PC landscape.

Wang made his prediction in a note to investors this week, a copy of which was provided to AppleInsider. He forecasts that a new iPad model with a larger 12-inch display, powered by an Apple-built next-generation "A8" processor will launch in the fall of 2014.

The analyst sees such a device shaking up the traditional, established notebook market — an industry that Apple rival Microsoft has been trying, but thus far largely failing, to overhaul with its own hybrid laptop-tablet devices running the Windows 8 platform.

He said such a device would expand the reach of chipmaker ARM, which makes the reference designs for Apple's A-series chips. ARM's gains would come at a cost to Intel, the dominant player in traditional computer chips, resulting in greater price competition, Wang believes.

In particular, Wang noted that the processor in a MacBook Air is estimated to account for 22 percent of the notebook's bill of materials. In contrast, the processor in a 128-gigabyte iPad is estimated to represent just 4 percent of the total cost to Apple.

Wang sees the 64-bit infrastructure introduced in Apple's new A7 processor — which powers the iPhone 5s, iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display — as a "game changer" that sets the stage for a so-called "iPad Pro." Recent rumors have suggested Apple has been testing touchscreen panels in the 12-inch range for a new product that could launch this year.

Some believe the naming convention of the new iPad Air, borrowing from the MacBook Air, could signal that Apple plans to release a professional-grade iPad, akin to the MacBook Pro in its notebook lineup. A 12-inch display would put such a device in a class closer to Apple's 11.6-inch MacBook Air. To date, all full-size iPad models have had a 9.7-inch screen, while the iPad mini models have sported 7.9-inch displays.

But Wang predicts that Apple wouldn't just simply release a larger iPad — he sees the company using the additional screen real estate to create a hybrid-style device that could serve as both a tablet and a notebook, and would make the iPad lineup more appealing to business customers.
