At the end of November we’ve talked at large about Samsung’s plans regarding the upcoming Galaxy S5, and at that time we’ve told you that the handset in question might actually miss the OIS train. As most of you already know, the Galaxy S4 and the Note 3 are lacking OIS (optical image stabilization), and that makes these smartphone’s cameras less competitive. We’re all hoping that Samsung will deal with this issue in 2014, but evidence so far suggests that the SGS5 will not feature this type of technology. Instead, the device in question will deliver the new ISOCELL camera.

However, Samsung wishes to make the camera on its devices stand out, and according to the latest reports, the Korean manufacturer has already started doing something about this.

Samsung to Focus on its Smartphones’ Cameras

Whether or not the Galaxy S5 will feature OIS, or whether or not the ISOCELL unit can make up for the lack of OIS remains to be seen. What’s interesting however, is the fact that Samsung has decided to merge the Wireless Business Division with the Camera Business Division. Sammy expects that the combined efforts of these two divisions will improve its future handset cameras, and it will differentiate its smartphones even further.

A Samsung official is being quoted by ETNews, saying: “We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones.”

In all honesty, high-end smartphones nowadays are very similar in terms of raw power. Most of them pack a Snapdragon 600 or 800 CPU, the same GPU, 2 or 3 GB of RAM and similar Full HD displays. As such, manufacturers really need to focus a bit more on other details in order to make their products stand out from the crowd.

Things like design, build quality and cameras are going to be the main factors determining which smartphone comes out on top. Accessories and peripherals are going to start playing a bigger role as well, and Samsung seems to be aware of this, as recently we’ve learned that the manufacturer  is going to focus a lot more these types of items.

We’re not sure whether or not Samsung’s efforts and its decision to focus its efforts on the camera department will bring OIS on the Galaxy S5, but things are looking very interesting. Any thoughts?
