Smartphones running on the Tizen operating system, developed by mobile phone operators in Japan, South Korea and China, are expected to be unveiled as early as February to rival those devices based on Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems which together account for over 90 percent of the world market.
The Asian firms, including NTT Docomo Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., want to forge a "third force" to hold out against the iOS and Android operating systems and ensure that their smartphone business will be a long-term key revenue stream.
According to sources close to the companies concerned, there will be an announcement on the release of Samsung smartphones based on the Tizen OS in time for the "Mobile World Congress 2014," a mobile phone trade fair to be held in Barcelona, Spain, in February. There will also be an announcement on the opening of "stores" for apps that can run on the Tizen OS, the sources said. Samsung will put Tizen-based smartphones on the market as early as this spring, the sources said. Japan's NTT Docomo intends to further improve the operability and other functions of the new operating system and release their Tizen-based smartphones by the end of this year.
According to International Data Corp. (IDC), a U.S. market research firm, Android had an 81 percent share of the global smartphone market in the July-September quarter of 2013, followed by iOS at 12.9 percent. The details of the specifications for those popular operating systems are fixed by Google and Apple, respectively, so that makers of terminals and mobile phone carriers cannot freely improve them on their own.
The Tizen OS has no such constraints and makers and mobile phone operators can adjust the OS to their terminals. It is also easy to make apps that run on the OS. Furthermore, the participating firms share the cost of development to reduce the financial burden on each of them so they can cut the prices of their smartphones, sources say. The Tizen OS is expected to be installed in mainstream models catering to advanced countries as well as in low-priced models for emerging countries.
Tizen initially began to be developed mainly by Samsung and Intel Corp. of the U.S. NTT Docomo, Fujitsu Ltd. and other Japanese firms as well as China's Huawei Technologies Co. subsequently joined the project to develop the OS. NTT Docomo chairs the consortium of companies tasked with promoting business projects using the Tizen OS. NTT Docomo had initially planned to release Tizen-based smartphones by the end of 2013, but the plan has been put off due to a delay in development.

TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES BRIGHT MODE HIGH-SPEED MOVIE TECHNOLOGY FOR CMOS IMAGE SENSORS IN SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS
Bright Mode Enables 240 fps Equivalent High-Speed, Full-HD Movie Capture
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, announces its Bright Mode technology. The Bright Mode CMOS image sensor technology allows smartphones and tablet PCs to record Full-HD video at 240 frames per second (fps), the industry's highest frame rate1. Additionally, Bright Mode realizes high quality, slow motion video playback at one-eighth the standard speed2 offering new dimensions in camera imaging during high-speed video.
"Bright Mode technology continues the Toshiba track record of delivering best-in-class image quality through continuous innovation," says Andrew Burt, vice president of the Image Sensor Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. "Bright Mode technology contributes to a wide variety of movie applications, such as high-speed recording, slow-motion movie, and fast-action cameras. It improves video viewing, especially in slow motion, which is timely given the explosion of mobile applications where the exchange of short movie clips is gaining in popularity."
High-speed video recording requires a high-frame rate with short exposure time, which results in underexposed images. Bright Mode technology doubles the exposure time by adopting interlaced3 video output, not the progressive4 output that standard CMOS sensors use. Bright Mode also employs charge binning5, which doubles the electrical charge of each pixel, resulting in an image four times brighter than that from a CMOS sensor without Bright Mode. Toshiba will also provide an interlace-progressive conversion program that enables users to offer high quality progressive video with low deterioration, without changing frame rate.
Availability
Sample sensors incorporating Bright Mode will be available in Q1 2014.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will have an AMOLED display but LTPS product from Sharp!
We have in recent years been able to know the AMOLED display products directly from Samsung and it was quite reasonable to think that this particular type of panel would be adopted even on the Galaxy S5 . Unfortunately, however, a voice coming from China informs us that for production problems, Samsung will not take on his next top range of this type of panel, but instead will use a display type LTPS (low temperature polysilicon). The panel will be directly produced in Taiwan by Sharp and the reason for this change is due to a considerable difficulties encountered in that Samsung would produce AMOLED display with a resolution of 2K. Moreover, his change of direction would have occurred even seen the growing interest in and commitment to the development (and production?) of flexible displays for its future devices.
In any case, remember that even the display LTPS can be perfectly able to handle very high quality images because in addition to being able to support a very high number of pixels (in this case the resolution 2K), appear to have a very high response speed, high brightness and a life time generally higher (even more than the normal AMOLED). At this point it is confirmed again as the Galaxy S5 will not have a flexible display (currently only present on LG G Flex ) but will only increase the number of pixels on the panel guaranteeing in any case definitely a very high quality.
It may seem curious surely the Korean company's choice to outsource the production of the display of the Galaxy S5 to Sharp , however, remember that Samsung currently has in his hand a piece of the company Nipponica bought last spring (which may make the news more than likely! ).

Report: Samsung Galaxy S5 to use LTPS LCD display made by Sharp, not AMOLED
Here’s yet another conflicting rumor about what type of display the Galaxy S5 will employ. According to a report byTencent, Samsung will be using an LTPS LCD display made by Sharp on its 2014 flagship, instead of an AMOLED unit made by Samsung itself. Samsung has reportedly hit a few production issues with 2K AMOLED displays and can’t produce enough units to meet projected Galaxy S5 sales volumes; the company also wants to bring flexible AMOLED displays to the mass market by 2015, and these reasons have made it turn towards Sharp for the S5.
Samsung recently bought a 3 percent stake in Sharp, so it’s plausible that it will be making good use of that stake, but as we’ve seen with every rumor in the past that has suggested that Samsung will be foregoing AMOLED display for its next flagship, this one will likely turn out to be false. But in case it does turn out to be accurate, we can hope that at least the Galaxy F – the rumored super premium Galaxy S5 that will employ a metal body – comes with an AMOLED display.

Biography Samsung GALAXY S5 will use Sharp screen debut in February
Tencent Digital News (Aqua) as the next-generation iPhone will use as much of the touch screen, the Samsung GALAXY S5 will use what the touch screen material is also quite a lot of rumors. Recently, the news from Taiwan, said the release of the industry chain, the Samsung GALAXY S5 will give up AMOLED display and switch to Sharp 's LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) display, and the main reason is due to Samsung's own production capacity and will display 2K The main focus placed on the development of a flexible screen.
Or with LTPS display
Although according to South Korean media DDaily previously reported that Samsung has begun 5.25 inches QHD AMOLED panel production, and the display will be used in the Samsung GALAXY S5. However, the latest news from Taiwan's industrial chain is disclosed that the Samsung GALAXY S5 will give up AMOLED touch screen and use the material produced by Sharp LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) display, its main feature is a high-resolution, fast response , high brightness, high aperture ratio and so on.
As for replacing the touch screen Samsung GALAXY S5 reasons, according to the sources say is experiencing great difficulties 2K Samsung ultra-high resolution AMOLED display production capacity, coupled with Samsung's main focus has also been placed on the development of flexible screen So Samsung chose the technology has been very mature LTPS display.
Rumors or non-accidental
Previously, South Korean media have also reported that the Samsung GALAXY S5 may switch to other display materials, and "International Electronic Business," the analyst Sun Changxu also broke the news on Twitter, Samsung GALAXY S5 will abandon AMOLED touch screen, and switch LTPS display, the same as for the main reason is due to yield problems caused.
In addition, one of the original Samsung Sharp also shareholders, all of the next-generation flagship Samsung uses Sharp's display also there is a big possibility. Of course, another possibility is that the Samsung GALAXY S5 and LTPS AMOLED display screen will be two versions launched, but such an approach on previous Samsung smartphones have had a precedent.
The answer revealed next month
According to earlier rumors display, the Samsung GALAXY S5 will be equipped with 5.25 inches 2K Ultra HD display, will bring up to 560ppi pixel density and better display. Also, the machine may also be equipped with ARM 64-bit core architecture Exynos 6 processor or 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AC) processor, equipped with Android4.4 system and offers 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage capacity.
According to Korean site inews24 reports, vice president of Samsung Mobile, the mobile chief designer Zhengdong Xun (Dong-hoon Chang) has been Shangri-La Hotel in Seoul organized New Year's party, for the first time confirmed that Samsung will release a new generation of the General Assembly held in late February MWC2014 flagship smartphone GALAXY S5. Therefore, Samsung's next-generation flagship whether to replace the screen, I believe it would naturally be revealed mystery.

Sony, Panasonic say to end joint OLED TV development
Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp , Japan's two largest consumer electronics companies, said on Wednesday that they will end joint development of organic light emitting diode (OLED) television screens, a thinner and brighter type of next-generation display in which Korean rivals have a head-start.
The two companies, which have been scaling back their TV operations after chalking up heavy losses in recent years, will instead focus their efforts on conventional liquid crystal display screens for so-called 4K ultra high-definition televisions which have shown greater promise, company spokesmen said.
Sony and Panasonic formed the OLED alliance in June last year with the goal of developing mass-production technology by the end of 2013. Doubts had mounted over the partnership's prospects, however, as it became clear it would miss its target.
OLED panels, while used in smartphones and tablets by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd , are still considered prohibitively expensive for larger sizes used in televisions.
They have not delivered the growth originally envisioned by the Japanese companies and are unlikely to be commercially viable in the near future, the spokesmen said.
Both companies displayed 56-inch OLED televisions at this year's CES electronics show in January. The spokesmen said they would continue independent efforts to develop OLED technology.
LG Electronics Inc , considered the front-runner in OLED televisions, has models on the market but they are significantly more expensive than comparable LCD televisions and have yet to achieve significant sales. Samsung also markets OLED televisions, which offer higher resolution and use less power than LCD panels.
