Sony used CES 2014 as the launchpad for its Xperia Z1s, and the company was happy to take us on a trip through the many parts that make up their latest flagship device. In a visit to its booth, the company showcased an Xperia Z1s that had been completely disassembled and would be put back together by hand. Obviously, this isn't the way that smartphones are normally built. Were we to rely on workers to assemble these devices by hand without the aid of major machinery, only a few hundred people would be able to receive a Z1s next week. However, the demonstration did give us an inside look into the phone and how several parts work together to deliver a full package of game playing, phone calling, video watching, and app loading. Below is a video of the Xperia Z1s being put back together with very light edits made for time and camera difficulties.

Sony brings a new camera feature to the T-Mobile Xperia Z1s

Android Central @ CESWhen Sony launched the Xperia Z1 last year, it introduced a new camera apps with several mini-apps for taking various kinds of shots. And now with the T-Mobile-bound Xperia Z1s the company is launching a new, exclusive "background defocus" app to for taking macro shots with artistically blurry backgrounds.

Launched from the main camera menu, background defocus lets you select an object in the foreground to focus on, then hit the shutter button and take your photo. Next you'll enter the defocus editing mode, where you can control the level and type of blur being used — a regular soft blur, or vertical or horizontal motion blur. When you've selected your blur type and level, hitting the check button will save your shot to the gallery.

The new background defocus mode is exclusive to the Xperia Z1s for the moment, though given the ease with which new camera features can be added to the Z1's camera, we wouldn't be surprised to see it on other handsets in the future. Check out our hands-on video for a quick walkthrough.

Sony’s new Background Defocus feature on the Xperia Z1S is gorgeous, when it works

Sony made quite a few exciting announcements this week at CES, but hidden among the bigger releases was Background Defocus, a tiny camera app that will make your photos look amazing.

The feature will start out as an exclusive for T-Mobile’s upcoming Xperia Z1s, which goes on sale in the US later this month. Still, I’d expect Sony to bring Background Defocus to other Xperia phones after some time has passed.

Here’s the feature in action, as demoed by a Sony rep:

To use Background Defocus, you choose a focus point and then tap the camera button. After some processing, you’ll be able to set the amount of blur you want and whether you want additional distortion. Behind the scenes, the Xperia Z1s is actually taking two separate photos at different exposures in order to let you blend in the blur. The feature reminds me a lot of how HDR works, just for a different purpose.

The Xperia Z1 line already includes a fantastic camera, but optical limitations have prevented even the best cameraphones have struggled with producing the much-coveted bokeh effect that you can get from DSLRs and other standalone shooters.

The Xperia Z1s also includes the suite of Sony’s other smart camera apps, such as Info-Eye, Timeshift Burst, Social Live and AR Effects.

Unfortunately, Background Defocus requires very specific framing and lighting, so you won’t be snapping selfies on the fly with it. Sony recommends you stand about two feet away from your subject and frame it so the background is at least three feet behind it. When I tried the Z1s at the Sony booth, the phone flashed errors in most situations outside of the demo setup.

New customers switching over to T-Mobile will have a nice little feature to play with if go with the Xperia Z1s. The rest of us will have to stick to our photo editing apps to recreate the effect.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 headed to T-Mobile, leaked documents reveal

While the world is looking forward to Samsung’s new PRO tablets, T-Mobile might be preparing to bring to its consumers the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 in the near future, according to leaked documents obtained by TmoNews. The documents reveal that both a demo unit and a retail unit were recently shipped to one of T-Mobile’s stores, indicating that a launch could take place before the month is over. Pricing isn’t mentioned, but given the humble specs of the device, it will likely be somewhere below $300 without a contract.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 on its way to stores?

While we wait, eagerly anticipating what T-Mobile has in store for us at its CES announcement in a few hours, there’s nothing like a good couple of leaks to keep us distracted. Earlier, we got news that the LG F3Q would be joining the Sony Xperia Z1S on store shelves from January 22nd. We’ve also heard from another source that T-Mobile will begin selling a variant of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3.

The image above is two screenshots taken from an inventory system that shows a live demo unit and sale unit of a black Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. The model number gives it away as being the 7-inch version. As for pricing and specific release date, I know nothing. But, if Samsung’s But the fact that it’s showing up ready to ship to stores is promising.

[CES 2014] Sony Announces The 5" Xperia Z1s For T-Mobile And The 4.3" Xperia Z1 Compact

Sony has two new phones to announce here at CES in Las Vegas: one specifically for the purple people over at T-Mobile, and one meant to appease users who want a premium phone without the bulk. The Xperia Z1s is T-Mobile's branded variant of the slightly older Xperia Z1. Aside from the extra letter and doubled storage, it's identical to Sony's international flagship. The Xperia Z1 Compact is a smaller 4.3" phone that keeps most of the premium features.

There's not much to say about the Z1s - it's the Z1 for T-Mobile, with T-Mo's LTE bands. You still get the 5" 1080p LCD screen, the Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, the same customized build of Android 4.3, and a bombastic 20.7MP rear camera. You still get Sony's gorgeous and waterproof industrial design. The only new feature appears to be expanded internal storage, which has been bumped up to 32GB for the Z1s. Sony is also bundling in an "exclusive entertainment pack" with six free movies and a 60-day Sony music trial. The phone will only be available in black.

The Xperia Z1s will be available online from T-Mobile's website on January 13th, and in T-Mo stores starting on the 22nd. The price will be $22 a month for 24 months ($528 total) with T-Mobile's zero down payment plan. If you buy both the T-Mobile Xperia Z1s and a PlayStation 4 at the same time, you can get a $100 rebate via a Visa gift card.

The Z1 Compact was previously and mistakenly reported as the Z1s, and it's probably the same device as the leaked "Xperia Z1 Mini" as well. It shrinks down the Z1 frame but keeps most of the features intact, save for the smaller and less-dense 4.3" 720p display. On the inside you'll find the same Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 20.7MP rear camera, NFC, and 16GB of storage. The software is Android 4.3 with Sony's custom skin, and the non-removable battery inside the waterproof casing is 2300mAh. This should be a nice option for users who want a smaller phone without downgrading the hardware.

 

Sony isn't ready to talk about pricing or dates for the Z1 Compact, but it will be available globally in four different colors. Per Sony's usual policy, that means it will probably be sold on the company's US web store at some point. I'd expect at least some discount off of the regular Z1, perhaps $499.99 unsubsidized.
